What Do You Get When You Ask 600 Students to Write ?

What do you get when you ask six hundred elementary Art students to write an artist statement? You get a whole lot of cuteness, a little confusion, and a lot of practice (on both ends). Using our Learning Management System Seesaw, I presented my classes with my very own "grown up" artist statement, then showed them a simpler artist statement that I wanted them to aim for.


By showing my students the goal with a mentor text and a rubric, most kids easily hit the target, "Introduce yourself, then tell your favorite material to use in art class and why." I also gave students the option of supports if they qualified for assistance under an IEP for Writing or were at the Beginning or Emerging levels of ELL status.

This is the very first time I've required the students to write in Art class with a formula. Normally, they only write to give feedback to their peers about how much they enjoyed their artwork. By requiring students to write during Art I hope that I have helped my students to see more ways in which both Writing and Art skills are useful and important. I am curious to see how six hundred young artists will continue to grow their literacy as we continue our work!
