Before reading this chapter and talking about it in class, I have never thought about how literacy affects every subject/discipline. It has been interesting to realize what different kind of shapes literacy takes in science versus ELA or Social Studies versus Math.
For example, mathematicians read to make meaning out of symbols, look for what is missing, and use the information they are reading as a means to an end (puzzle pieces). (p.18) In comparison to how a Historian would read: focuses heavily on compare and contrast, looking for bias in every reading/article, and determining means of a word through its context. (pg. 19)
One thing to remember when reading within the disciplines is making sure the students are reading content related to the class everyday but also the content has to be interesting enough to possibly make the students want to read at home as well. Dull textbooks with heavy vocabulary and low color would not be interesting enough, maybe an article/journal from a real scientist in kid-friendly language, or a biography from an important person in history that relates to the SS lesson.
