Chapter 2- Reading with Disciplines

After reading Chapter 2, Reading within the Disciplines, it gave me a greater understanding of the importance of including literacy in each subject for students to understand general text. This allows students to understand the purpose and context in their reading and how it differs depending on the text. Science is described a as a discipline of inquiry, meaning that those students need to build their knowledge in order to learn the knowledge necessary for inquiry. In math, literacy is patterns, abstract representations relationships, equations and understanding visuals. Math is different from text because it is a discipline based off solving problems and organizational text. Looking back at the different ways how each subject reads, it’s interesting that each one has a different approach that helps students retain and build knowledge.
